So when I upgrade my to my next phone, I hope Sony or HTC (not sure which one yet) will have a case like this.

Promo Material at Design Junction 2014: “Good promo material is like a piece of art.” (See how and why below)

There’s only so much one can buy on the day(s) before you realised that we’re only half way through the month and you’re trying to survive till payday. Or you’ve spotted some beautiful lighting, or experimental furniture which you would quite like once you’re able to get a place to really call home. So we whip out our cameras and get trigger happy and collect business cards/ postcards like there’s no tomorrow. Or maybe that’s just me. Either way we are trying to have some record of who these designers are and what they have created via the business cards, postcards and leaflets that we end up collecting.

Then you go home and empty your (free) bag of promo material and start going through them one by one, only to find that there is only a (large) handful of brands who have some element of their product/design to serve as a quick reminder of who they are. The rest (comparatively more than the large handful) just have their names on a nice heavy stock paper, if that.
__

If you’re a new designer or have a new customer, unfortunately just the name isn’t going to do anything and the customer then has to find the time to type in your web address to see who you are. With any luck, they picked up your card because they liked what they saw and were not one of those people who pick up everything for the sake of it, but still, you’ve then been put to the back of the mental queue of the people who are continuing to make an impression.

Especially if you haven’t had the time to talk to every person who looks at your stand to tell your story, channel your personality or do whatever it is that you do to leave an impression. These events are incredibly overwhelming because there is just so much to take in and trying to remember every light, chair, accessory, experimental object is hard work. Heck, I managed all four floors, but had to go around Ground and First floor four times!

Now you could have printed your name/logo so beautifully that it bumps you up that mental queue- I’m particularly drawn to embossed, textured and foiled things in this scenario. Printing fancy is a big cost and it may not even be your brand, “look”. But you don’t even need to chuck your holiday savings into fancy printing, you just need a strong image on the front and unless you’re a brand who can take over half a level of the event, you’re probably better off with putting your name to your face (product).

These little bits of paper promo count.
__

Why I have chosen to choose this subject to comment on is probably down to the fact that I’m always thinking about my own promo material and what the hell I should print/make/give when I do get round to shouting out to world more about what I do and that I exist and because I’ve always loved all forms of “packaging” and branding. Oh and business cards..

So! Here is a small collection of my favourite promo material from the show, I chose these ones because:
a. Ultimately reminds me of who they are and what they do.
+
b. is produced beautifully in terms of printing quality.

c. has a great design/image on it.

= add all these things together and I’m going to want to stick it on my wall for myself and others to look at every time they pass it.
It’s like a piece of art.

That includes things I would not even consider ever buying, but who knows, maybe one day.

*Note*
There were also a ton of other great brands which I loved and I will cover on a later date =)

Here’s a small selection of ocean/wave photos that I often have rotating as wallpaper on my phone. As we use our phones so much for work as well as play. It’s nice to have something calm to look at when you have to reach to your phone at unhealthy levels throughout the day.

Bozka Rydlewska

Whilst I was clearing up my workspace I found a stack of postcards that I picked up from last year’s Illustrative Berlin Festival. One that I found strikingly beautiful was by Bozka Rydlewska’s The Looking Glass. I also found a gold poop stamp from my excessive Japanese goods buying days.

More of her work can be found on her official site.
